He may be drawn wide but Timeless Prince will still be given the chance to prove his class with a black-type win in the Ramornie Handicap 2015 by his Gosford-based trainer Tony Newing this Wednesday at Grafton Racecourse.

This year’s edition of the Grafton Cup Carnival’s feature sprint, the $150,000 Listed Crowe Horwath Ramornie Handicap (1200m), features a full field of hopefuls.

Drawn out in gate 14, into 13 with the two emergencies out, is Newing’s last start winning Casino Prince gelding Timeless Prince.

Well-performing apprentice Winona Costin retains the ride on the five-year-old after she partnered Timeless Prince to victory at Royal Randwick in the Winter Dash over 1200m on June 20.

Newing is now hopeful the 37-start veteran sprinter can finally win a stakes race and reward him and connections of the stable star.

“I always thought if he would win a stakes race it would be on a wet track,” Newing told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“I do think he will win a stakes – it won’t be a great one – but it will be good enough for us to take.”

The horse has outstanding form on Heavy tracks with two wins and a second from his three starts in the mud, including the Winter Dash that was run on a Heavy (10).

He carried only 52kg that day though and will need to be improving when up in class and carrying 55.5kg in the Ramornie Handicap where connections of original top weight Big Money decided not to accept, forcing weights to rise 1.5kg.

It was the Winter Dash victory that convinced Newing to throw the sprinter in the deep end in the Ramornie Handicap, the field absent of the likes of WJ Healy Stakes winner Dothraki, Brook Road and past winner Howmuchdoyouloveme who all ran over the weekend instead.

“He’s done everything right this horse and he has nothing to prove to us so we’re going to have a throw at the stumps and see where we finish up,” Newing said.

“He could have filled 12 boxes that would have been empty otherwise. We’ve got a syndication company that have come on board and they bought five yearlings the other day and mentioned to me, ‘if we didn’t see Timeless Prince racing we wouldn’t have approached you’. That’s a huge thing for me.”

Some of the more notable Ramornie Handicap rivals Timeless Prince will come up against on Wednesday include Tony Gollan’s WJ Healy Stakes third placegetter Rocket To Glory, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained mare I’ve Got The Looks who looked outstanding in a Randwick gallop on Saturday and in-form Queenslander Le Cap shooting for a third straight win.
